School Budget for 2010-2011
The Board of Education will
be adopting the proposed budget for 2010-2011 at its meeting on Tuesday, April
20th at 8:00 pm in the Schreiber High School Auditorium. The current proposal calls for an increase of 1.97% from last year’s
budget. To achieve such a limited increase, the Board has been forced to
propose cuts at every level. Current personnel cuts being considered include a Weber Middle School PEP teacher; a librarian, guidance counselor and social worker at Schreiber High School; four elementary school teachers; and two district administrators. Other proposed cuts include reducing the sessions offered by the Pre-Kindergarten Program; eliminating some Weber and junior varsity sports teams; and postponing repairs for the Weber roof. AT LAST will be removed from the budget, and the program will be run independently through the Port Washington Children’s Center. Of particular interest to our members, we understand that the effect of the Weber PEP teacher cut will be the elimination of the 7th and 8th grade PEP program.
We urge our members to learn about the budget and be active in this process. It is vital that the budget accurately reflect the choices and values of our community while being fiscal responsible and acknowledging the difficult economic situations facing many residents. There are many ways to share your opinions: attend the upcoming Board of Education meeting, send an email to Board of Education members at boe@portnet.k12.ny.us, or simply contact your AGATE liaison.

AGATE of Port Washington, a Home & School Association of the
Port Washington Union Free School District, is a parent-based group
working within the school district to support a curriculum geared to
challenge all students to their fullest potential. Focusing on the
education of high-ability children, we provide a conduit to the
administration and the Board of Education as a way to express our
concerns. AGATE also provides an opportunity for parents to be part of
a group having similar interests.
