Gifted Students: Pressured, Yet Ignored
Dr. Arnold Dodge was formerly a superintendent, administrator, principal and teacher and is now an assistant professor and chair in the Department of Educational Leadership and Administration at Long Island University’s C.W. Post Campus. He will discuss the conflicts facing gifted and talented students who are simultaneously pressured to excel yet frequently ignored as more time and energy are spent preparing for standardized testing.

Advocating for Your Child
AGATE & SEPTA will host a joint meeting to hear Joel Ziev, Ed. D., professional parent advocate and Director of Partners for Access. Dr. Ziev has served as an effective advocate for equal access for people with disabilities for more than 25 years. The key to successful educational programs for children with disabilities is collaboration by parents and educators, and Dr. Ziev will discuss how we can work more productively with school personnel to plan and obtain effective and challenging educational programs for our children.

Friends Matter: Increasing the Social Skills of Gifted Children
Is your child having a hard time making friends or keeping them? Do you believe that your gifted child does not have the skills necessary to navigate social situations successfully? Dr. Brenda Marshall is a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner with a doctorate in behavior science from Columbia University, a professor at Ramapo College of New Jersey, and the director of Learn 2 Choose Inc., Center for Social Emotional Learning. Dr. Marshall specializes in developing social skills and emotional intelligence in gifted children. She is the creator of "Eye on My Strength" a social skills program for exceptional learners.

AGATE & SEPTA will host a joint meeting to hear former Port Washington teacher Ronni Aronow, M.A., M.S., who will discuss the model developed by Achieving in Higher Education with Autism/Developmental Disabilities (AHEADD) for supporting students in higher education with Learning Disabilities, High-Functioning Autism, Asperger's, Non-Verbal Learning Disorder, and Attention Deficit Disorder. Its four core elements are AHEADD professional staff involvement, development of campus and community support network, utilization of campus resources, and peer mentoring.
